Dr Tony Chen is a comprehensive Ophthalmologist with subspecialist fellowship training in Cataract and Refractive surgery, manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and Medical Retina. He specialises in refractive (laser) surgery and premium cataract/lens surgery, keratoconus management, and in retinal conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal vein occlusions.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Otago, New Zealand and completing Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) at the University of Sydney, Dr Chen underwent specialist ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He further completed a fellowship in comprehensive ophthalmology as the Senior Registrar at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. During this time, he was also involved in overseas volunteer work with the Myanmar Eye Care Project and in rural Mainland China.
Dr Chen then travelled abroad to complete three further subspecialty fellowships, and was awarded with The Sydney Eye Hospital Alumni Association Travelling Scholarship:
Dr Chen takes pride in keeping up-to-date with the evidence and latest advances in ophthalmology and is actively involved in research. He has written several publications and has presented at multiple conferences. He has also been involved in the training of future Ophthalmologists as a former Clinical Associate Lecturer and current Adjunct Lecturer at the University of New South Wales.
Besides English, Dr Chen is fluent in Chinese, Mandarin, Taiwanese and basic Cantonese. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, playing tennis and exploring the exuberant dining scenes Sydney has to offer.
