Different health professionals involved in eye care
An ophthalmologist is a medical practitioner (doctor) who has completed firstly a medical degree and then specialist training in ophthalmology, including surgery and the management of medical eye conditions.
At Ashfield Eye Clinic, care is provided by the doctor, with the assistance of orthoptists and nurses, the doctor guiding the team and assuming responsibility.
Orthoptists have a Science degree and study medical technology and eye science, They are expert at examining children, assessing vision and visual function and carrying out diagnostic procedures.
Optometrists, usually work autonomously, but sometimes also work within ophthalmic clinics. They are skilled in assessment of the status of vision and in the prescription of glasses and fitting of contact lenses. They are able to diagnosis eye conditions and initiate management in consultation with an ophthalmologist. They can share care collaboratively with ophthalmologists.
Any patient may book to seen at our Clinic. A referral from either an optometrist or a general practitioner is required in order to receive a rebate from Medicare.
Our scope of practice:
There are a broad range of conditions of the eye affecting vision, comfort, appearance and wellbeing. Also there are many general medical conditions that can have associated eye signs and symptoms.
Training and practice as a general medical doctor prior to specialising in ophthalmology equips an ophthalmologist to understand eye conditions in the context of the patient as a whole.
The term ‘holistic’ in medicine refers to a comprehensive view and understanding of the understanding of a patient’s needs, conditions and life circumstances.
An eye diagnosis can often help in the understanding of a patient’s general health status. There are many systemic conditions which can cause eye involvement and many eye conditions which can be a clue to help in the diagnosis and management of a patient’s general health.
Our mission is to provide modern, up-to-date medical care in a compassionate way and in a welcoming environment while aiming to improve the quality of life of our patients.
We pride ourselves in high level of patient care, aiming to provide each patient with individualised attention from your first consultation and well beyond your eye surgery recovery.
