Conjunctivitis

Red eyes, inflammation or discharge from the eye can be due to many causes, including infection or allergy.

To determine if you have conjunctivitis a swab of the conjunctiva helps with diagnosis and treatment.

  • The conjunctiva is an important semi-clear lining of the white or sclera of the eye and also the inside of the eyelids.
  • The conjunctiva makes and supports tears which lubricate the eye.

There are two main types of conjunctivitis

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection in the eye.
  • Viral conjunctivitis is caused by the same virus that causes colds and will usually be accompanied by common cold symptoms.

Conjunctivitis is a very contagious eye infection that causes redness, swelling and discharge from the affected eye. Despite its unsightly appearance, it usually clears up on its own after a couple of days but can be very uncomfortable.

It’s also very easy to pass conjunctivitis from one eye to another, or one person to another, so always wash your hands and try not to rub the affected eye.
